Night is Also a Sun developed as a response to the economic, social and environmental conditions in Iceland during the time the installation was developed. The text in the piece (which was used for the poster and on the wall in the installation) is taken from an essay by Georges Bataille and was both a conceptual grounding point and a reference to the almost permanent darkness of early January in Iceland. The documentation showing glasses, magnets, wine bottles and lights depicts a section of the installation in which these materials were used as props or 'puppets' for the making of videos. The installation was constantly in process and continued up until the final day of the residency at which time the materials were taken apart, destroyed or returned to their normal use. Oskar Arnason and Hertha Richardt Ulfarsdottir assisted and collaborated with me during the project.
